What is the Nuclear EMC effect? Scientists shed light on a physics-defying mystery |
Nuclear science is many things: it's powerful, it's potentially dangerous, and it's ultimately still not totally understood by scientists - at least when it comes to its constituent parts. Controlling the splitting of atoms to fuel a nuclear reaction is old hat these days, but while scientists understand how these reactions take place what they don't understand completely is something much more fundamental: the behavior of protons and neutrons. |

Particle seen switching between matter and antimatter at CERN |
A subatomic particle has been found to switch between matter and antimatter, according to Oxford physicists analyzing data from the Large Hadron Collider. It turns out that an unfathomably tiny weight difference between two particles could have saved the universe from annihilation soon after it... |

Cryo-electron microscopy breaks the atomic resolution barrier at last |
If you want to map the tiniest parts of a protein, you only have a few options: You can coax millions of individual protein molecules to align into crystals and analyze them using x-ray crystallography. Or you can flash-freeze copies of the protein and bombard them with electrons, a lower resolution method called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). |

Thorium power has a protactinium problem |
In 1980, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) observed that protactinium, a chemical element generated in thorium reactors, could be separated and allowed to decay to isotopically pure uranium 233-suitable material for making nuclear weapons. |

How the Other Fukushima Plant Survived |
When we hear the words "Fukushima disaster," most of us think of Fukushima Daiichi, the nuclear power plant wracked by three core meltdowns and three reactor building explosions following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Without electricity to run the plant's cooling systems, managers and workers couldn't avert catastrophe: People around the world [...] |
